A new report from the SSHOC consortium documents the specifications for an online heritage artefact annotation service to be developed from the existing, reality-based, 3D Aïoli platform. The new service will be of interest to archaeologists, architects, engineers, materials specialists, teachers, curators and restorers of cultural property.

Whilst advances in digital technologies have facilitated the collection, visualisation and indexing of digital resources, managing multi-dimensional and multiformat data introduces particular challenges as regards developing relevant analysis and interpretation methods, sharing and correlating heterogeneous data, and archiving results for long-term preservation purposes. 

As the first step towards developing the service in its entirety, the report details the upgrades to the Aioli platform and includes specifications concerning the technical robustness of the platform, the collaboration framework, the management of controlled vocabularies, compatibility with CIDOCCRM, and linking with visualisation tools.

Being able to build semantically enriched 3D descriptions of heritage artefacts from simple images and spatialised annotations coupled with additional resources will enable the heritage community to create new methodologies for multidisciplinary work in a context where the comparative and cooperative analysis of heritage objects becomes a reality.
